Taberna Noroeste is a small restaurant located in the upper area of the Poble Sec neighbourhood, on the hillside of Montjuic, and it was dreamt up by Javi and Dani, who wanted to open their own business.
The premises used to be an old restaurant, so the project consisted of renovating the interior, giving it a new layout and design. The three main challenges were: the surface morphology, the very long and narrow space, and a limited budget.
The new design sought to open the space as much as possible and recover elements of the building’s original construction. This is why the partition in the middle of the premises was demolished and walls, ceilings and floors were cleaned until the original materials were uncovered. Now, these materials characterise the premises and give it the feel of a tavern.
To break up the longitudinal shape of the room, we used furniture, ornaments and lighting to create 4 different areas with different atmospheres:
The entrance, where the sensation of introducing the street into the premises was generated through the use of the Barcelona panot paving.
The bar, the most informal area in the restaurant.
The area between the bar and the restaurant, comprising a large table with an ornate ceiling that marks this transition of spaces in a gradual manner.
A large open kitchen and a long bar couch with individual tables along the wall.
The surrounding materials resulting from the work are characteristic of the early 20th century constructions in this Barcelona neighbourhood where the restaurant is located. All the interior design has sought to create a tavern atmosphere, which was one of Javi and Dani’s main objectives for the project.
