Camerinos by Ana Rubio is a small hairdressing salon located in the picturesque Gothic quarter of Barcelona.
As a result of rebranding her salon, she needed to renovate her workspace completely. A small space with the constructive character typical of the buildings in the oldest neighbourhood in Barcelona, and endowed with a high ceiling that gives it a more spacious feel.
The project focused on three ideas. The first one was to open the hole and reorient the staircase, which organises the space and communicates with the upper floor, creating a private area for customer service.
The second idea was to reorganise and enlarge the hairdressing area to be able to attend to more customers. This was Ana’s main project request.
The third idea was to enhance the original dressing room aesthetics, which reference her name. So, we designed 3 large dressers with movie or theatre design room lights.
The proposal also included a change in the aesthetics of the walls, floor and ceiling. We suggested stripping the walls to discover the building’s original materials and showcase the natural wooden beams shaped with the ‘Catalan volta’. The floor was covered with black ceramic tiles to provide consistency in all rooms and highlight the remaining existing materials.
The material surroundings resulting from this work are characteristic of early 20th century constructions in the Gothic Quarter, and the new materials used, such as oak and iron, represent nobility and simplicity.
